What is a wrap document and why do employers use one?

A wrap document "wraps" ERISA-required plan and SPD language around insurance certificates and benefit booklets, combining multiple welfare benefits into a single ERISA plan. It fills the compliance gaps carriers leave and can reduce multiple Form 5500 filings to one.
Insurance carriers write certificates of coverage to satisfy state insurance law — not ERISA. Certificates rarely name a plan administrator, describe ERISA rights, or contain amendment procedures. A wrap document supplies all of that missing language and incorporates the certificates by reference, so together they form a compliant plan document and SPD.
Wraps deliver two practical wins:
- Compliance: one document closes the ERISA gaps across medical, dental, vision, life, and disability benefits.
- Consolidation: wrapping benefits into a single plan can mean one Form 5500 instead of several, and one SPD distribution.
A wrap only works if it's kept current — new benefits, carriers, and eligibility changes need to be reflected, which is why an annual document review belongs on every committee calendar.
